CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach to enhance physical and mental wellbeing and health.  The Cranial-Sacral system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This system extends throughout the body via nerves and connective tissue.

Using the lightest of touch, usually no more than 5 grams of pressure, CranioSacral Therapy takes advantage of our bodies natural ability to heal itself.

This type of therapy is indicated and effective for treating a wide variety of ailments associated with pain and dysfunction in the body including but not limited to:

  • Tension headaches
  • Migraine headaches
  • Chronic neck pain
  • Chronic back pain
  • Central nervous system disorders
  • Orthopedic problems
  • Concussions
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Scoliosis
  • Learning disabilities
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Emotional difficulties
  • Stress and Tension
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Connective tissue problems
  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome, or Dysfunction (TMJ)
  • Neurovascular or Immune Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Post-Surgical dysfunction

Relieve Stress & Chronic Pain with Relaxing Craniosacral Therapy

When you think about massage therapy and bodywork, you likely think about pressure. However, sometimes just the slightest touch can offer the most relief. Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a light-touch therapy that provides incredible relief from chronic pain and stress.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy uses small manipulations of the skull and sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of the spine) to circulate the cerebrospinal fluid. The gentle movements can greatly impact tension and stress on the body caused by compression. Many clients find the therapy extremely relaxing both during and after treatment.

The practice of craniosacral therapy was originally developed by Dr. John Upledger in 1975. While researching the craniosacral system and cranial osteopathy, Dr. William Sutherland discovered movement in the cranial bones (the bones of the skull). Using this information, Dr. Upledger tested his theory that selective pressure and manipulation of the cranial bones and sacrum could promote the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the spinal column. From this, CST was born and is now a highly sought-after alternative therapy.

What are the Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique. It eases tension by encouraging the movement of fluid and releasing compression in the head, neck, and spine. This movement has a great impact on the body as a whole, which is why the effects of cranial stimulation and manipulation are widespread.

Therapeutic Body Concepts offers craniosacral therapy. Clients who have received this treatment have reported many benefits, including relief from pain, joint issues, depression and anxiety, sleeplessness, and restlessness.

Although more research on the direct benefits of CST is needed, evidence-based studies in alternative therapies and medicine have shown demonstrated positive effects on the quality of life of patients with fibromyalgia and in urinary tract control in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Who Should Have Craniosacral Therapy?

Most clients interested in craniosacral therapy are experiencing pain, migraines and headaches, insomnia, chronic fatigue, neck pain, sinus infections, or mood disorders. If other treatments haven’t worked to relieve your pain or symptoms, craniosacral therapy may provide an alternative route for gaining relief.

Because the pressure used is so slight (less than the weight of a nickel) CST is safe for almost anyone of any age. If you have certain blood disorders or a recent head injury or trauma, you should avoid CST. Check with your doctor to make sure a craniosacral therapy treatment is safe for you.
